Pop! Fiya!! DIRB! 4th of July Block Party

We’re about to get it (Fiyah) Crackin’ this 4th of July. We’re starting this thing off early, so bring a lawn chair for the fireworks and an empty stomach for the FREE cookout.

The first part of the evening will take place on the patio, so you can view the fireworks from a prime location. It will also be family friendly, so bring the kidfolk! Once the fireworks end at 10pm, the grownfolk are taking the party inside.

With DIRB! DJs Gracie & Tonio and guests Dayta, Jef Cashless, Elroy Boogie & Bobby Trill. Let’s get it (Fiyah) Crackin!!!

I got a call late yesterday from my dad to inform me that Michael Jackson had passed. Appropriate since Papi was the one who bought some of my fist records, including the Thriller LP.

In celebration of MJ’s life, here are some remixes and covers you should grab on this momentous day. I bet more and more mega mixes have popped up on the Internets since, but these happen to be some of my favorites.

Startin’ with the classics, Soul Avengerz took MJ’s “Off the Wall” and housed it up for the refreshing weekend staple, “Enjoy Yourself”. The “P.Y.T Demo” is so necessary and U-Tern did a fine job of extending the intro and outro to really get the jam going. The Bird Peterson “Thriller” is a fantastic example of what a good remix can be. The Z-Trip remix sheds a stripped down light on the 1969 song that is so good- it is eerie. Check out Petra Haden doing what she does best–sweet, sweet acapellas. And finally, a Bushwaka “Billie Jean” bonus.

Rest in peace, MJ.

JUST IN TIME FOR OUR ALL-OUT DIRB! BLOCK PARTY (aka SDF-One’s B-day) THIS SATURDAY, JUNE 27 AT BLOCK 21 (2420 WASHINGTON) …

DIRB! DJs took over the KTRU Rice Radio airwaves on May 22. Here’s the first installment of the 3-hour long mix we recorded. SQUINCY JONES, GRACIE CHAVEZ, ANTONIO, G.WIZZ & JEP were on hand to make it happen. The only thing that didn’t happen was that awkward family photo Antonio forgot to take!

Santigold

With her recent legal troubles behind and reprise of her namesake, Santi White can keep it moving on to the next as Santigold. The artist formerly known as “Santogold” (a nickname she got from a classmate back in the ’80s for her sister-girl style) is back on track this summer touring in support of her f/k/a self-titled debut.

She also makes her debut here in the H tonight at the House of Blues-Houston with support from female rapper Amanda Blank and New York-based Trouble Andrew. Doors open at 7 p.m. and show starts at 8 p.m.

The “official” afterparty kicks off next door in the HOB’s Foundation Room right after the show with DJ Fixture. Psst! Password is “cupcake”.

But if you wanna bling-bling BIG, call your boss now and tell ‘em you won’t be in tomorrow. The “unofficial” afterparty goes down at Shake & Pop (Boondocks, 1417 Westheimer) with Amanda Blank, Spankrock DJs Devlin & Darko, Austin’s Prince Klassen, Dayta & Squincy Jones.
