Make it a Block Party Weekend

DJ Sun

So it’s confirmed: Soular Grooves’ visionary, DJ Sun (check out his Wikipedia entry), will be the opening act for Thievery Corporation. And as anticipated, the post partying Friday night will ensue at Block 21 (2420-B Washington, Houston).

Kill Jeffe

But if you don’t happen to make it out Friday, join us Saturday night at Block 21 for El Jeffe’s birthday celebration. He’s guest DJing (if he can see straight after a few b-day shots) along with his DIRB! counterparts, Gracie Chavez and Antonio.

Stop by anytime 10 p.m.-2 a.m. There’s never a cover, no dress code, and 21+ to drink. But you knew that!

Another Space and Time

Theivery Corporation

If there was ever a tradition to pass on to the next generation it would have to be taking an occasional existentialist moment to the soundtrack of Thievery Corporation. To categorize their music as an international mix of downtempo, trip hop, dub, reggae, funk, soul, jazz, and exotic beats would simply be too generic. And everyday I tune into my Pandora Thievery Corp. station ready for anything the day may bring.

So it goes without saying that I wouldn’t miss a rare opportunity to see them live for their Houston show at the newly opened House of Blues (1204 Caroline, 888.40.BLUES). In support of Radio Retaliation, their latest album, Rob Garza and Eric Hilton again borrow from dusty grooves and all but forgotten styles.

The show starts at 8 pm on Friday, October 24 with DJ Sun, fellow Block 21 resident, opening. Check any worries at the door–this show is guaranteed to take you to another place and time.

Indeed, their music (see below) inspires.

 ”Lebanese Blonde” is absolutely classic.

For Everybody, Everybody

DJ Mel

You won’t belong to me, I let you down
I walk around ‘n’ see your night skyline
I feel the light but you don’t want to stay
So lonely now, just let me off downtown
Sad and free, sad and free
Sad and free, sad and free

When I said it was over, you aimed at my heart
Won’t be long for I’m leaving all my love
But I’ll feel it forever, no sounds in my life
You can call that no livin’ on my own, so free

Everybody, everybody, everybody, everybody
(Repeat above over next verse)

Love it! Thanks Smelly!!

Final RUFF CUTT

Ruff Cutt flyer

This coming Saturday night is our last installment of RUFF CUTT at Dean’s Credit Clothing, Houston. Closing it out with us will be G.Wizz , our guest DJ.

Although Dean’s has a great sound system, warm vibe, and a stellar staff, getting people to go downtown in this econonmy has proven to be quite challenging. So, we’ve decided to move on after this finale and do RUFF CUTT as one-off events. But no worries–FREDster, El Jeffe and I will get together from time to time under the DIRB! umbrella to CUTT it up again.

Thanks to DJs G.Wizz, Antonio, Greg Corner (Kill Hannah), Squincy Jones, Cush Cush DJs Ace Booncoon & B*Luxe, Dayta (we owe you one!), Gwennie, Steven & Toby at Dean’s and our crowd that likes it RUFF. Thanks again for all your support.

New Kid on the Block

Tonight I’m DJing the grand opening of Block 21 (2420B Washington, Houston, TX, next to the Pig Stand) with DJ Pooks. The lounge is the new spot brought to you by the people at The Flat (1701 Commonwealth).

Come out to take a peek at the Moroccan-themed venue with state-of-the-art sound and lights, plus a wrap-around video screen. Then, shake it on the big dancefloor or, for a friendly chat, get away to the Howard Hughes room or spacious patio. There’s also a full bar and kitchen–a nice touch that carried over from The Flat.

Hope to see many of you join la movida!
