For My Girls

Animal Collective recently released a new album! Yes, these weird folksy guys are releasing some more strange tunes. I have yet to take a good, long listen to their new album Merriweather Post Pavillion, but I am sure it will be sort of an extension of their last album, Strawberry Jam.

I’m particularly feeling the first single – “My Girls” – off of the album. The moving lyrics and angelic melodies tugged at my heart enough that I immediately sent it to the hub-bub. [Yes, I very emo, right?] And thanks to our hometown boy Dave Wrangler for a lovely remix and Mexicans With Guns for their uptempo rendition, I can drop each in a set. Both are super DJ-friendly remixes that sound very clean and crisp, but the MWG bass-heavy version is fuego. It’s one I highly suggest you guys cop here.

HMH Remix Contest

Glasnost Remixed

Glasnost Remixed

Houston’s Most Hated is already gearing up for SXSW 2009 with its recently announced remix contest. Local electro band Glasnost has offered up three of their songs, “Come Alone,” “Great Divide” and “Static,” on the shit-talkin’ blog for a re-do.

So those blogger-producer types up for the challenge can choose a track (and stems), all of which are posted up for download on HMH thru February 13th. Submit  your remix to tracks@houstonsmosthated.com and will be posted on HMH as they’re recieved. Entries will be voted on by HMH readers thru February 20th. Your remix could be one of the few chosen to end up on Glasnost’s upcoming EP, The Great Divide.

For full-on details, go to www.houstonsmosthated.com/glasnost-remix-contest.

Ladies and gentlemen, get ready for world domination. And, may the Most Hated win!

Sobers Satin Sheets Vol. 1 Mixtape

Sober's Satin Sheets Vol. 1 Mixtape

We had so much fun with our boy Sober at Block Party this last Saturday! We’re working on rounding up all the photos to give you some idea of what you missed out. Sober took to the decks with some ’80s/’90s classic ish and it was prom night all over again!

And, as promised, Sober was armed with a gang of CDs for his new mixtape, Satin Sheets Vol. 1. He uploaded the mix for us and released the cover art. Peep it all below.

So thanks to all the H heads that came out to support our growing DIRB! Saturday night party–Gwenstepher, Rosi, Monique of Hater Mag, Cashless, Dayta, El Roy, Hippo and his girl, Sapo Grapes, Julio, Sarah, Ty, and all our backup dancers–ya’ll know who you are.

We’ll update this post with photos and links really soon!

Designated DJ

SOBER1

DJ Sober (The Party/CentralBooking, DTX) is on award tour this week as he blazes thru The H. His stops include Thursday with the Speakerboxx boys and an opening slot on Friday for DJ Krames at Boondocks. But our pièce de résistance is on Saturday night. The Sober 1 will be laying down some new jack swing and hot, hot ’90s jams for the sexy grown at Block Party (Block 21, 2420 Washington). DIRB! DJs Antonio, Squincy Jones and I will be there to help build up the dancefloor orgy.

For those that don’t know, Sober has been honing his skills behind the decks since his DJ’ing start in 1993. He’s part of The Party, a well-known Dallas-Austin DJ crew (DJ Nature, Select and Klassen) who share Sober’s ability to seemlessly blend any genre of music.

A consummate tastemaker, Sober has earned opportunities to spin for big crowds in bigger cities like H-town. No stranger to the the hustle, he helps produce The Party’s wildly successful events like the all-ages Hands Up parties and a variety of top-notch Texas monthlies, including one here at Boondocks. Sober also runs his own clothing line, Decade Clothing.

And yes, he really is “sober,” which is fine as wine. It leaves more drinks for most of us. So let him drive the decks. We’ll just be ready to let him take us there!

Here’s DustyCrates’ “5 On It” Q&A with Sober:

DustyCrates: What was the first record you ever owned?
Sober1:
DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince – He’s The DJ I’m The Rapper. I owned this way before I got tables.

DC: What was on your first mixtape?
S1: House music. I learned to mix house before I started spinning hip hop. I had listened to hip hop since the mid ’80s but got into house music through going to warehouse parties and seeing DJs rock out first hand. The guy who taught me the basics was a house DJ. I bought dance records for a while, but something wasn’t there. I needed more variety in my crates.

DC: Your latest mix, Satin Sheets Vol. 1, is set to be full of guilty pleasures. How did your first kiss go down? Don’t be shy! Haha!
S1: I think it was middle school, like 6th grade. The girl was more experienced. I think she dumped me after the kiss. I had to step my game up after that!

DC: What about your first heartbreak?
S1: Wow. When you are young and someone dumps you, you always think you’re heartbroken at the time, but that’s all grade school steez. I think I’ve been guilty of breaking some hearts myself.

DC: Remember your first down-low? Ahem, we mean, download!
S1: Next question please. Downloads need to be 320 kbps high-quality files!

DC: Finally, what’s the last track you think you’ll play for us at Block Party?
S1: It all depends how the crowd is feeling. I always like to leave people with a slow jam as the lights come up. Maybe some Jodeci, Kells, Joe, Silk? We will see.

Sober promises to bring out hard copies of his latest mix, Satin Sheets Vol. 1, he recorded exclusively for Block Party. Be one of the first to cop one before anyone else doesthis Saturday night. Trust. It’s some baby makin’ ish!

Here’s a sneak peek of what you’ll get…

DIRB! Firsts

DIRB First

There’s a first time for everything. In fact this is our first DustyCrates post for the year on our first anniversary. And although we’ve been operating as a “DJ collective” for about 3 years, DIRB! has never come together to play under one roof. Thanks to a holiday visit from Matt (a.k.a. Sizzle), who is holding up the DIRB! Seattle chapter, we were able to make it happen on Saturday night at Block 21 (2420 Washington, Houston).

Matt, Antonio, El Jeff and I Did It Real Big [DIRB!] at our bi-monthly, BLOCK PARTY, with Squincy Jones (dood, you’re pretty much DIRB! now) and all our friends plus more. We may not have another opportunity like this, so it couldn’t have been any more special.

The band photos are up; shit’s way too white bread now! Whut!!?

Thanks to Midge and Amish for snapping some pics throughout the night.
