Speakerboxx Thursdays Grand Finale

Thursdays in July, 2009
The BACKROOM (3718 Main @ Alabama, Houston, TX)
Doors open: 10 p.m. – 2 a.m.; No Cover; 21+

For Immediate Release
Contact: Fahrenheit Media, info@fahrenheit-media.com, or pr@fahrenheit-media.com

Houston, TX (07/21/09) — This July is the final month that Speakerboxx runs its course at The Backroom (3718 Main behind The Mink). Thursdays belong to the Speakerboxx heavyhitters two more weeks with hosting DJs Squincy Jones and Dayta on deck plus El Roy Boogie and Reko Trill on the mic. The last Thursday night, July 30, is host to the not-to-be-missed Sneaker Summit Pre-Party.

For a year and some change, the weekly hot spot, which was a spin-off of the wildly popular Rock Box at The Proletariat, has been hosted by resident DJs Squincy Jones (Awwready.edu) and Dayta (NanaChill.com). This duo continues to meld music genres, bring in national touring DJs and, most importantly, bring up local talent.

You can catch the Speakerboxx gang over at Block 21 (2420 Washington) on Fridays, where they regularly spin more “party rocking jams”. Their official Rotate Fridays kick off at Block 21 on July 31st.

So for now, don’t sleep on the LAST TWO Speakerboxx Thursdays in Houston:

JULY 23 – ILL FADED SHOWCASE feat. DON SANTOS
JULY 30 – LAST SPKRBXX … Sneaker Summit Pre Party ($2 Cream Soda Whiskeys // Free Giveaways)

Urban Oasis

Houston’s Underground House Movement (HUHM) headed by dj/producer Lucas Keizer presents the first in a series of outdoor dance music events called “OASIS“. It starts this Saturday, July 18, at 2 pm in the afternoon and goes late into the night. The venue is conveniently located on Richmond Avenue near Mandel in the Montrose area, but you’ll feel like you’re in a tropical paradise complete with lush cabanas, palm trees and waterfalls. More details in sideline flyer here.

Before we get DIRB! Block Party going at Block 21 (2420 Washington) with guest DJ Chris Miguel, I’ll DJ out in the patio for coco-rita time starting at 5 pm and Tonio spins inside a bit later from 7-8 pm. We’ll both be spinning a set of Latin-inspired music very much alinged with Movida–DIRB’s revival of a sultry musical movement.

We set it off during a live recording on KTRU FM in May. The final installment of the DIRB! on KTRU Live mix Pt. 3 begins with some heat from south of the border. Bajo tropical and new cumbia is on the rise, folks. Make sure you’re part of la movida!

Hot, Hot Heat

I came across this mix earlier this week and reminded me of how much I enjoy a good minimal, tech-house mix with just enough steel drumming to give Houston’s hottest summer a soundtrack and make it a little bit bearable.

Round Table Knights continues with their tradition of churning out mixes based on the seasons, the time has come for their Summer mix and of course it’s brilliant as always.

Round Table Knights – Summer Mix 2009 (zShare)

Tracklist:

Sandra Nikaké – La Mauvaise Réputation (Blackjoy Instr Mix)
Jarvis Cocker – You’re My Eyes (Disco Song) (Pilooski Remix)
Ghostape – Your Eyes (Round Table Knights Remix)
Who Made Who – Keep Me In My Plane (Dj Koze Hudson River Dub Mix)
Wareika – Facing The Sun
Stimming – After Eight
Neuroxyde – Yebo Yebo (Neuroxyde From Berlin Rework)
Worthy – Surdo
Daniel Steinberg – Cocolips (Heinrich & Hirtenfellner Remix)
Bauchamp – Calypso (Round Table Knights Remix)
Joris Voorn – Sweep The Floor
M.in, Sebastian Schuster – New Orleans

Jeffe, I think you’ll particularly enjoy it the most!

Sunglasses at Neon Nites

Neon Nites kicks off their 2nd monthly installment at Zeppelin (3101 San Jacinto) with the usual suspects–Fixture, G.Wizz, Bristle, Jeff Mac–and featuring El Nino.

If you can stand the hot glow of the bangers played tonight, then you’ve definitely found your destination for the night. Just don’t leave home without your sunglasses! Shit’s gonna be hot! See Sideline Events for more info –>

Appropriately, the Soular Grooves camp will bring some warmth to the patio, thanks to Eric Salzman, Jibril and Seth Jones.

Although this is out of order, I feel it necessary to post the DIRB! Live on KTRU Part 4 mix from G.Wizz & Jep.

Enjoy it! I’ve got the final part of this live mix with me and Antonio cued up for next week.

No Minor Beats

The Major Lazer boys Diplo and Switch’s debut full-length, Guns Don’t Kill People… Lazers Do, is out now on Downtown. The reggae’n'dancehall-themed collaboration features a rowdy females–M.I.A. and Santigold along with dancehall mainstays Vybz Cartel, Ward 21 and Busy Signal. Recorded in Jamaica, Guns is like a blunt full of dub-heavy beats and irie vibes. The only thing missing is Shabba!

Major Lazer says, “Me would have liked for deal with Shabba [Ranks] or one of them youths. Them men are legends. Them put reggae and dancehall music on an international stage, see me?” (XLR8R, July 2009)

I’m fighting off a cold, but my protective eye ware and dance shoes are ready for tonight. Yes, Diplo and Switch touch down at Escobar (2905 Travis) this evening. Tickets seem to be a commodity so get yours at groovetickets.com so we can see you pon da flo!

Anyway, they recently did this mini mix for Annie Mac .

Bang! Bang! Fuego!

She may have started out as a visual artist but the world soon came to know her for her musical styles. Lately M.I.A. is known as a mommy, Grammy-nominated musician and now director.

“Bang” by Rye Rye featuring M.I.A. is her directorial debut. Video is pretty low-tech, but compliments the angsty, frantic beats. So, go ‘head girl!

On a side note: Rye Rye won’t be performing at Warehouse Live in Houston this Saturday. Instead, Theophilus London takes the stage with A-Trak and Treasure Fingers. More show info >>
