DIRB! DJs took over the KTRU Rice Radio airwaves on May 22. Here’s the first installment of the 3-hour long mix we recorded. SQUINCY JONES, GRACIE CHAVEZ, ANTONIO, G.WIZZ & JEP were on hand to make it happen. The only thing that didn’t happen was that awkward family photo Antonio forgot to take!

First up, it’s a dubstep mix (PT. 1) by Squincy Jones featuring an intro by moi–Gracie Chavez.

Hailing from Houston’s multicultural community tucked away just on the north side of downtown, dubstep innovators Heavy Heights is made up of the scene’s most notorious players. There’s Suma from Rebel Crew and Soular Grooves, then you’ve got BMC of Texas Dub and Purrin Lion, and to top it off you’ve got the voice and the creator of Rebel Crew, Joe B. Truth and Rights is their debut release which features local vocalists Gina and Karina Nistal, plus hints of Dunnock’s Ill Advisory.

Backed by local imprint Starlight Beats, Heavy Heights has created and assembled a collection of dub-infused hip hop that aim to put Houston on the map for yet another original sound. Peep their heavy duty tracks over at HoustonsMostHated.

The album release has been followed up with a healthy dose of Texas Dub events and live performances at SXSW 2009. This Saturday, April 4, Suma joins us at DIRB! Block Party (Block 21, 2420 Washington) to blend in his ecclectic break beats on the decks.

It seems just like yesterday I met DJ Cashless at the old Aerosol Warfare warehouse. Back then, Jef was a UT student and DJ broadcasting mostly hip hop over the airwaves and on the Web. On weekends you’d see him at then local joints like Reprogram and The Waxx. This cat clearly knew what was up in the H. But then he disappeared.

Fast forward: It’s Diplo’s first show in Houston and Cashless emerges. After flip flopping between Japan and Houston, Hater Mag’s contributing writer is here for good–well at least for now. And he’s back at the decks, ‘cuz he ain’t playin. Cashless is now part of the much diggable NY-based DJ crew Buhbomp, which consists of Empanadamn, JD, Lil Tiger, and Elz. But most importantly, Cash is back in the mix.
