Manos Arriba Para ZZK

El G of ZZK Records

Last night, the Bombón crew dropped in at KPFT‘s studios for the Son Pacifica show. We were surprised that this mostly Spanish-speaking community radio show somehow found out about our special Bombón for the  Rio Arriba Tour; and were also happy that the radio hosts invited us in, eager to hear about this new Latin movement. After the hour-long show, we all walked away with a mission to share more of these ritmos Americanos–regardless of any language barriers.

Bombón Especial
With a  clear step in that direction, this Saturday night, April 16, Bombón is bringing you an evento muy especial with South American DJ/producer Chancha via Circuito and head honcho El G (see video/documentary above) of ZZK Records! They deliver debut performances in town at The Green Room (813 St.Emmanuel, next to Warehouse Live).  And we, Bombón DJs (Gracie Chavez, Navó, OG Bobby Trill and Cashless), are sharing the stage/decks as additional musical acts for the night. Doors open at 9pm for 18 and up, and tickets are $4/$7 at the door.

Be sure to RSVP on FB for more details and music.

Flyer by Sober

Las Conexiónes
You can also catch Tuesday night’s podcast with Chancha and Bombón DJs on SonPacifica.com. Or tune in to KPFT 90.1 FM on Tuesdays from 10-11pm (CST) as they will regularly host Bombón’s guest artists in the months to come.

And happy to add that Tipping Point is also on board with Bombón Houston, so we’ll be seeing a lot of support from them on special events, too! They’re co-sponsoring our first Cinco/Seis de Mayo festivities in a couple of weeks. We may even start free dance lessons!

And special thanks to We Get Famous for the post this week, DJ Sober for this fly-ass flyer, Fahrenheit-Media‘s Chris Cardenas (aka the Hub) for sound, Mariana for letting us run it at Avant Garden every month, and Tonio for video, creative direction and holding down Bombón/DIRB! on the West Coast. Don’t be hatin’!

Dunno, but it feels like somethin’s heatin’ up!

Bang! Bang! Fuego!

She may have started out as a visual artist but the world soon came to know her for her musical styles. Lately M.I.A. is known as a mommy, Grammy-nominated musician and now director.

“Bang” by Rye Rye featuring M.I.A. is her directorial debut. Video is pretty low-tech, but compliments the angsty, frantic beats. So, go ‘head girl!

On a side note: Rye Rye won’t be performing at Warehouse Live in Houston this Saturday. Instead, Theophilus London takes the stage with A-Trak and Treasure Fingers. More show info >>

BEAT Tour’s Rump-Shaking Recap, part II

Gracie Chavez

After a wild weekend at Boondocks and a new school year resumed, the Scion BEAT Tour continued on at Houston’s Warehouse Live. On TUE, August 26, locals flowed in to see the likes of Fashen, The Knux, Klever and our opening 2×4 set. I took Witnes’ spot and got it goin’ early, with Dayta and Squincy Jones jumping in about an hour later. I met up with Fashen chillin backstage as Big Sky Media’s Adam Bauer and Shan paced the halls preparing for the upcoming acts.

Meanwhile, The Knux were entertaining a couple of local ladies and enjoying a cigarette or two—to calm the nerves no doubt. On stage, Fashen wrapped up his assorted set and Squincy stepped up to play beats for The Knux. The NOLA natives came out to perform “Capuccino” and other songs with style and energy. They swayed the crowd along and even ribbed Squincy about his Humble (Texas, that is) roots. (It’s all good, Squince—just own it!)

And finally, a waxen Klever, in his spotless whitewashed jeans nonetheless, put down an impeccable and vibrant set. Big shouts go out to G.Wizz, DIRB’s Antonio, El Roy Boogie, Leo, Gwen & Julie, cMo & Oahn, Nonsense, Cashless, Shina Rae, Reko Trill, reps from HoustonsMostHated.com, Hater Magazine and H-town folks for making it out that night.

Bun B’s Doin It Real Big, In Case You Thinkin He Ain’t

Last night’s Bun B solo performance was damn near legendary. Shit, I’m getting goose-bumps just thinking about it. Warehouse Live filled to capacity with every colored Texas folks under one roof. After an excellent extended set by The Rub’s DJ Ayres (check out the Houston for Dummies mixtape below), the live funk/soul band Orgone took the stage. They became the backdrop for the pride of PA as Bun stepped up on stage.

For the next hour, Bun set off the place with all his classics (“Draped Up”,  “Pocket Full of Stones”, “Front Back, Side to Side”, “Get Throwed”, “Big Pimpin”, “International Player’s Anthem”), new jams off his latest album, II Trill (“You’re Everything”, “Gangsta”, “Swang on ‘Em”) and he even did his remix of MIA’s “Paper Planes.” Wow, indeed!

I paused to video tape the clip above. Throughout his performance, I kept thinking how incomplete it felt without Pimp C. Although, I’m sure it was an understatment for Bun. Midway through the show he very eloquently thanked his H-town crowd for their never-ending support and expressed how much he misses his brother. Bun went on to reassure everyone that Pimp’s spirit was in the building.

And the show went on as we all chanted “UGK for life!”

Quite Klever, Houston

I came across a gang of Klever remixes and mashups online a couple of years ago, vaguely making the connection that this was the same DJ Klever that once reigned as 2000′s DMC National Champ (click to watch the video of Klever killin it). Truth be told, I just thought (and still do!) that this ATL white boy’s tracks are slammin’ hott.

I soon began a campaign to bring Klever down to RockBox Thursdays, but as fate would have it, Klever’s star was quickly rising and we couldn’t bring him down.

Well, next Tuesday, August 26, is my chance to witness his Houston headlining debut along with Fashen and The Knux and my homeboys Witnes, Squincy and Dayta. And the best thing about this is that I, Gracie Chavez, have just been added to the lineup!

Can you BEAT this, Texass?

2008 Scion and Imeem.com present

B.E.A.T TOUR with Witnes & Squincy Jones,

Gracie Chavez and License 2 Trill

Friday, August 22th

Boondocks (1417 Westheimer Road, Houston, TX)

Doors: 10 p.m. – 2 a.m.; Admission: Free, 21+

Houston, TX (08/14/08)–That City of Syrup is in for a real treat as 2008 Scion and Imeem.com bring the B.E.A.T. Tour to Houston. Very special hometown DJ Witnes joins his counterpart, Squincy Jones, along with Gracie Chavez and locals License 2 Trill at Boondocks (1417 Westheimer) on Friday, August 22nd.

Last year, Houston’s scene-setters Witnes and Squincy Jones released Do Ya Homework, an online mixtape of difinitive ’80s hip hop cuts that earned them lots of positive press on Urb Magazine , trend-setting blogs and various social networks. The party-rockin’ DJs also held down Rock Box Thursdays for a few years with Spin Magazine nodding that the weekly was, “the best time you’ll have all month.” After Witnes’ departure to New York, Squincy’s SpeakerBoxx parties have carried on in the same tradition.

Former Rock Box resident DJ, Gracie Chavez, is a veteran of the Houston music scene and one of its first female DJs to grace the decks. From guiding fellow female DJs as co-fiounder of Les Femmes all-female rendezvous, to her 10,000 download triumph of her recent Yo! Mami mixtape, Gracie Chavez is just the perfect act with a pedigree heavy enough to handle the chaos of any party.

License 2 Trill are brothers and DJs Bobby and La-Low . They’ve been featured in Houston’s Sneaker Summit for which they released a mix, H-Town Winter Sneaker Summit ’08 Official Mixtape.

This B.E.A.T. Tour show is a precursor to the Klever, The Knux and Fashen soirée at Warehouse Live (813 St.Emanuel) on Tuesday, August 26, which also features Witnes, Squincy Jones and Dayta.

This event is also sponsored by Frank151 and Grills Houston.
